Sanitation bye-laws to be introduced in Shama district

The Shama District Assembly would soon introduce bye-laws to curb insanitary conditions in the district.

Mr Enoch Kojo Appiah, District Chief Executive (DCE) announced this at a community durbar, which was preceded by a clean-up exercise at Lower Inchaban near Sekondi.

The Friends of the Nation and the Coastal Resources Centre (CRC), two non-governmental organisations, organised the programme under the Hen Mpoano Initiative, an Integrated Coastal and Fisheries Governance and Fisheries Programme in collaboration with the Assembly.

Mr Appiah did not disclose the time the bye-laws would come into force but said people who indiscriminately litter the environment, living in unhygienic conditions and drivers who park at unauthorised areas would be fined.

The DCE urged chiefs to collaborate with the District Assembly to inculcate discipline in the people.

Mr Stephen Kankam, Programme Coordinator of “Hen Mpoano Initiative”, said the clean-up exercise was primarily organised to clean the “Anankwar River” and its environs of waste and to create environmental awareness.

He appealed to the inhabitants of the area to desist from polluting water bodies and building at unauthorised areas.

Mr Kofi Agbogah, Chief Executive Director of the CRC donated 10 wheelbarrows, 10 Wellington boots, 10 shovels and 10 spades to the community, which were received by the Assemblyman of Lower Inchaban, Mr Kwamina Arthur Binney.

The Chief of Lower Inchaban, Nana Akosua Mfrasie II expressed gratitude to the organisation for the donation.
