Gov’t urged to support the aged
A plea has been made to government to do more to provide the aged with adequate social protection and support.
Dr M. Y. Caesar, Chief Executive Officer of M Y Caesar Company, an alternative health care centre, said their welfare deserves the attention of the nation for they served us well.
Making the appeal through the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, he said creating a Ministry to oversee their needs would not be out of place.
He said the extended family system which used serve as their source of security has now become weak and that is why it is necessary to look at other safety nets to help them to live in some dignity.
Dr Caesar called for the drafting of a National Ageing Policy to ensure efficient implementation and coordination of government activities relating to the elderly.
Old age, he said, is a special gift from God and therefore it is important not only to appreciate but to show love to them.
He suggested to the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to mainstream ageing into their development planning activities.
