Put nation ahead of selfish ambition – NCCE Director
The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr Alhassan Yakubu, has reminded Ghanaians to put the collective good of the country ahead of personal ambition and comfort.
He said they should accept to pull together to build a just, free and discipline society, devoid of acrimony and bitterness.
He was speaking at a durbar held at Wawase in the Afigya-Kwabre District to celebrate this year’s ‘Citizens Week”.
“Ensuring Peace and Stability in the Country – Everyone Counts” was the theme and it brought together chiefs, political party officials and supporters, the security agencies, religious groups, assembly members and school children.
Mr Yakubu spoke of the need to give space for political accommodation and tolerance and said that was necessary to keep the nation’s democracy on the path of continued growth.
He said political actors must play by the rules of the game, reject violence and other acts that tended to create tension.
He encouraged the people to make deliberate efforts to become conversant with the constitution to enable them to safeguard their fundamental rights and freedom.
Police Superintendent Bismark Agyapong, the Mamponteng District Commander, urged all to accept responsibility for protecting the peace and security.
He said they should not do anything to create confusion and chaos, adding that it was pertinent to take useful lessons from countries torn apart by political conflicts to avoid the pitfalls.
Oboadum Kusi Antwi II, the chief of Wawase, called on people entrusted with political power to be accountable and transparent in their dealings.
Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, Afigya-South Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said justice and fairness were critical to the promotion of peace.
