Ghana Supreme Court jails journalist for criminal contempt

prisonThe Supreme Court of Ghana panel sitting on the election petition has sentenced Ken Kuranchie, Editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper and one Stephen Atubiga, an electrician and supporter  of the National Democratic Congress to various prison terms for criminal contempt of court.

The two were reported to have made contemptuous statements on the ongoing election petition against the court.

For not showing remorse, the Panel handed Mr Kuranchie ten days imprisonment while Atugbiga received a sentence of three days.

The nine-member Panel presided by Justice William Atuguba made the ruling in court today July 2, 2013.

A third person, Mr. Kweku Boahen who also appeared before the court on the same charges, was discharged.
