FDA destroys expired drugs, chemicals in Sunyani
The Brong-Ahafo Regional Office of the Food and Drug Authority (FDA), on Friday destroyed unwholesome products worth GH¢24,300.60, at its landfill site in Sunyani.
The products, comprising cosmetics, expired drugs, household chemicals, variety of drinks, aphrodisiacs and food items were seized from 400 shops in four Municipalities and eight districts in the region.
Briefing journalists prior to the destruction, Mr Matthew Gyang Nkum, Brong-Ahafo Regional Officer of the FDA, said the items were seized from traders in Techiman, Wenchi, Kintampo and Sunyani Municipalities as well as Asunafo North, Asunafo South and Asutifi North Districts.
The other Districts were Jaman North, Jaman South, Kintampo South and Dormaa West and Techiman North.
Mr Nkum explained that the Post Market Surveillance Unit of the Authority conducted a routine exercise in grocery shops, pharmacies, licensed chemical, cosmetic and herbal shops in the second quarter of 2013 and seized the products.
He advised the general public to check for the expiry date, FDA registration number and packaging when buying commodities.
Mr Nkum also cautioned the public against the use of unregistered aphrodisiacs as their safety and efficacy could not be guaranteed.
