Wa Assembly fails to elect Presiding Member

The Wa Municipal Assembly on Wednesday failed to elect a Presiding Member after two rounds of votes.

Mr Adamu Ibrahim, the current Presiding Member polled 21 of the 42-member house while his rival Abu Nuru had 25.

There was a stalemate, as each of the contestants could not get the required two-thirds of the votes.

Alhaji Duogu Yakubu, Municipal Chief Executive appealed to the members to bury their differences and  elect a Presiding Member to help direct affairs of the assembly.

He announced that a technical committee had been formed to start the process of naming of streets.

“The exercise will involve a lot of resources and the assembly may forego some planned projects and activities to enable the exercise to be implemented as quickly as possible to meet the 18 months deadline,” he said.

Alhaji Yakubu expressed concern about the poor routes and layout of the Wa Central Market and traders who had taken over the pavements and open spaces to do business.

He called on Ghana National Fire Service and other relevant state agencies to decongest the market and help educate trader on the best practices to avoid disasters.

The Municipal Chief Executive suggested the   establishment of more senior high schools in the municipality to absorb the numerous junior high school leavers.

Alhaji Yakubu said the assembly has been able to collect GH¢252,387.13, representing 148 per cent of the target for the first quarter of this year.
