Road Safety Ambassador says to promote helmet wearing

Ms Bishara Pelpuo, 2012  Road Safety Ambassador on Thursday declared her intention to embark on a road safety campaign project dubbed: “Operation wear your crash helmet campaign,” in the Northern part of the country.

The project is expected to focus on motor bike users as it is the predominant means of transport in the north.

Ms Pelpuo who won the 2012 Road Safety pageant award organised by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) made this known during the 2013 Mid-year Review Conference of the commission in Kumasi.

It is on the theme: “Scaling up towards the attainment of 2011 – 2013 Action Plans Objectives, No Excuse.”

She explained that under the project she would import special road safety branded crash helmets at an affordable price to be sold to motor bike users.

Ms Pelpuo said a research she conducted revealed that the issue of affordability was major among the many reasons why motor bike users failed to wear crash helmets when riding.

She said she is linking up with funding agencies including Glo Ghana, Zoomlion Ghana Limited and Total Petroleum Ghana to roll out the  project soon.

Ms Pelpuo said she intends to extend the road safety clubs in some junior high and senior high schools to tertiary schools to facilitate road safety education.

She said she is in contact with Ms Amy Ansong, crowned Ms Virginia, in the United States and other organisations in that country to support the project.

Ms Pelpuo expressed regret that most people who rush to accident scenes lack basic knowledge in the application of first aid to victims, which sometimes worsen their conditions.

In this regard, she and her colleague Road Safety Ambassador, Ms Gifty Solo and Ms Patience Hammond have hatched the idea of taking first aid tips via the social media.
