Suspected armed robber shot dead by Police
An unidentified suspected armed robber was on Sunday, July 7 shot dead by the Winneba Police Patrol team at Ansaful near Winneba Junction, Winneba District Police Commander, Superintendent John Opoku, has said.
Briefing the press at Winneba on Monday, he said during their patrol duties on that day, the team received a distress call from Ansaful that some armed robbers have attacked their hostel.
He said the victims claimed that the robbers robbed them of their valuable items including two laptops and mobile phones.
The Commander said the team on their way to the scene between the hours of 02.00 hours and 03.00 hours met the deceased person bare-chested coming from the place and order him to stop.
He said while the police, who suspected the deceased, were interrogating him, he suddenly started running way.
Superintendent Opoku said the team gave him a hot chase to some distance where he entered into a nearby maize farm and this compelled the police to open fire resulting in his death.
He said when the body was searched one live “BB” Cartridge and a knife were found on him adding that the body has since been deposited at the Police Hospital in Accra for autopsy.
The Commander said armed robbery cases have been on the ascendancy in the Winneba area where about ten robbery cases have occurred in recent times.
He said in most cases the robbers at gun point robbed their victims of their valuables including cars, mobile phones, money and even raped some women.
The Commander said the police have put in place strategies to deal with the situation and appealed to the general public to continue volunteering information on the activities of suspected people in their area.
