KATH needs $70m to complete maternal centre – CEO
The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), requires $70 million to complete its 950-bed capacity Maternal and Child Care Centre.
When completed, the project, which started in 1974, will be equipped with 10 theatres to improve maternal care and also reduce the perennial congestion at the labour wards of the hospital.
The $70 million required is for interior and other works as the main constructional work has been completed.
The Chief Executive of the KATH, Professor Ohene Adjei, who announced this during the 2013 mid-year performance review programme of the hospital, said budget allocations to the hospital over the years had not been adequate to enhance the early completion of the project
It can be recalled that during a similar programme in December, last year, Professor Ohene Adjei told the media that “the government had released GH¢18.2 million for constructional works of the seven-floor project to progress steadily”.
He further said that the project was likely to be completed by the end of this year, adding that” the project has now been roofed and with electrical and plumbing works ongoing, the expectations are that all constructional works would be completed by the end of 2013”.
Touching on the performance of KATH since January, this year, Professor Ohene Adjei said the strike embarked upon by the doctors and the pharmacists impacted negatively on service delivery and the finances of the hospital.
He indicated that an amount of GH¢468,410.39 was used to procure medical equipment to enhance the hospital’s operations.
Prof. Ohene Adjei said the items purchased included baby warmers, biopsy forceps, flexible cystoscope sets, endoscopic cameras, Laparoscopy instruments and mobile ultrasound machines, among others.
He said management was on course to replace some of the aged equipment and added that the Ministry of Health had initiated the process for the supply and installation of a new Oxygen plant at the hospital by the end of August 2013.
