Give youth appropriate sex education – UNFPA Official

Parents have been urged to give appropriate sexual and reproductive health education the youth, to prevent them from engaging in sexual promiscuity and become indiscipline.

Madam Doris Mawuse Aglobitse, a Programme Analyst, at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), said this would also help them to make informed decisions about their sexual life and to prevent maternal mortality.

She made the call at a three-day media orientation on the UNFPA Strategic Plan for media practitioners in the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions, in Tamale.

Madam Aglobitse urged parents, religious leaders, district assemblies and civil society organizations to ‘’call a spade a spade by educating the youth and discussing with them issues on sexual organs and reproductive health’’.

“If it is penis call it as it is, if it is vagina call it as it is and not refer to them as sticks or hole,” She emphasized.

Madam Aglobitse, also Communication and Resource Mobilization officer,  asked parents to empower the youth by giving them equal education and knowledge without discrimination.

The workshop was to build the capacity of media personnel so that they could effectively contribute to publicity, education and advocacy on the Millennium Development Goal Five (MDG5) and other issues affecting women and young people as well as preventing maternal mortality.

Participants were taking through topics such as ‘’UNFPA Strategic Plan’’, ‘’Priorities for Country Programme Six (CP6) and role of Media and Communication Advocacy Network (MCAN)’’.

In addition, participants were taken through practical sessions on reporting on MDG5 and issues concerning young people, using articles, features, press releases and messages on world population day celebrations as illustrations.

The orientation also created the opportunity for UNFPA to establish and consolidate a formidable network of MCAN dedicated to population and development issues.
