TEWU urges gov’t to review single spine salary for public universities

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress, has called on government to take immediate steps to review the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) of public universities.

This would help correct the disparities and distortions in the grading structure of its members working in the universities, it said.

The Union said the review should “align the grades of staff of the universities with other comparable institutions”.

A communique jointly signed by Mr Peter K. Lumor and Mr Ralph A. Apaaya , National Chairman and General Secretary of the Union respectively, also demanded that all allowances due employees of public university hospitals should be paid.

TEWU also asked government to carry out the negotiations on the “Category Two and Three Allowances,” which it had since 2008 failed to review in addition to reviewing the Collective Bargaining Agreements.

It said this negatively affected the efficient performance of members in the Ministries, Departments, Agencies.

Employees with critical special skills within those universities must be recognised and paid their market premium in order to attract and retain them for effective service delivery towards human capital development, it added.

TEWU also said government should speed up the negotiations for the determination of the “Base Pay and Pay Point Relativities” on the SSSS for 2013, adding that, if by close of Thursday, September 6, 2013, the issues raised were  not addressed, “the union shall advise itself”.
