Universities ready to admit SHS students – Minister

Both the public and private universities have put in place adequate measures to admit students who will qualify.

Apart from the initial amount of GH¢7.6 million the government released for the expansion of r facilities, the government has also released an additional GH¢3 million for those facilities to be furnished.

Mr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, a Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations, said this during a media briefing at the Flagstaff House.

He said the Polytechnics also have the capacity to increase their admissions by 100 percent this academic year to absorb more students.

About of 70 percent of the 490,000 students who wrote the West African Senior High Certificate Examinations have qualified to pursue various courses in the tertiary institutions and this has raised concerns as to whether the limited facilities would be able to absorb the huge number.

He said while the University of Education in Winneba was poised to increase their admissions by 100 percent, other public universities would be admitting between 10 and 40 per cent of the students.

The Deputy Minister said private university colleges also have the capacity to admit more than they did in the previous years.

He said “The University of Professional Studies for example will increase their admission by 100 percent, Kwame Nkrumah University for Science and Technology between 30- 35 percent and the University of Mines at Tarkwa by 15 percent.”

Mr Mohammed said the student loan scheme had been extended to students in the private tertiary institutions this academic year and gave the assurance to parents that adequate measures would be taken to make their children comfortable in school.
