Dealers unhappy with proposed ban on second-hand tyres

Second-hand dealers in Ashanti, have expressed opposition to the proposed ban on used tyres importation by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), describing the decision as disappointing.

They warned that if implemented, it would have crippling effect on the transportation system.

Mr Agyei Adomako, Regional Chairman of the Second-hand Dealers Association, dismissed the claim that these tyres are contributing to road crashes, saying that could not be correct.

These are not just dumped into the country they are properly inspected by the Ghana Standards Authority for quality assurance, he said.

Addressing a news conference to state their position on the planned ban, he insisted that apart from affordability, the used tyres, last even longer than some new ones.

The real causes of the accidents are known – bad nature of the country’s roads, speeding, careless disregard for road traffic regulations and lack of vehicle maintenance, and these are what the Commission needs to focus on, he said.

Mr Adomako said the serious economic implications of the ban for businesses and jobs must not be ignored.

The NRSC is reported to be seeking parliamentary approval to outlaw the importation of second-hand tyres.
