Abusive words on air must stop – DCE

Mr. Sylvester Noumah Daddieh, Jomoro District Chief Executive, has appealed to Ghanaians to refrain from using offensive language against their leaders through phone-in programmes under the pretext of freedom of speech.

He said the country’s democratic dispensation had passed that stage where people use insulting language on their political opponents, saying “We should discard these things and focus on socio-economic development of the nation”.

He said some radio and television phone-in programmes leaves much to be desired due to the use of foul language by some callers.

Mr. Daddieh expressed these sentiments at a town hall meeting held at Half Assini on Tuesday.

The programme aimed at creating a platform for the citizenry to express their concerns on local governance issues.

It was organised by the United Civil Society Organisation of the Nzema District (UCSOND), a non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Local Government Development Programme (LOGODEP).

The DCE said it was unfortunate that some people call radio stations to abuse their leaders when they are not clear with certain issues and, therefore, advised the citizenry to contact the authorities concerned for clarification on local governance issues.
