NRSC inspects Madina road works
Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah, Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), on Thursday inspected on-going road construction works in the Madina Municipality to ascertain measures being put in place to ensure pedestrian safety.
She was conducted around the Madina Boundary Road by Mr Kofi Nti Appiagye, Acting Maintenance Engineer of the Accra Metropolitan Roads Department.
Mrs Obiri-Yeboah said the numerous carnages recorded on the N1 Highway due to foot bridges sited far apart, had prompted the Commission to make sure that this was not repeated on other roads.
She said throughout the country 1,000 people lost their lives through roads accidents annually, and the Commission was seeking to at least reduce that to half.
Mrs Obiri-Yeboah said: “For this to be achieved, it is a collective responsibility of all stakeholders, if only we want to make a mark”.
She urged the contractor to ensure that the roads had appropriate zebra crossings or footbridges and traffic lights to facilitate easy crossing by pedestrians.
She advised pedestrians to be more careful when using the roads and make sure they crossed at designated crossing points, adding: “we don’t want to experience what happened on the N1 Highway again, your life is very precious”.
Mr Samuel Asiamah, Senior Planning Officer of the NRSC, urged the contractor to make adequate provisions for bus stops and crossing points for people with disability.
Mr Kofi Appiagye, Acting Maintenance Engineer, said the project was being executed by M/S G. S. Int. Developers (Gh) Limited at an initial cost of GH¢11 million, but had been revised to GH¢38 million.
He explained that the project, which begun in February 2011 and was expected to be completed in August 2012, was initially meant to be a single lane carriage road, but was later changed to a dual carriage with by-passes and many entry terminals, and is now expected to be completed in July 2014.
He said the project would be completed by the rescheduled deadline.
The scope of work consists of 8km of roads; namely Gulf House – North Dzrowulu Link, 2.0km, National Identification Authority road, 0.60km, the Feeder Roads/CENCOR-N1 Link 0.87km and the dualisation of Boundary Road with the asphaltic concrete pavement surface.
Others are Motorway Slip Road (0.58km), Twumasiwaa Streets (0.60km), and the ARS roundabout- Madina Estate Junction (0.6km).
