Government to revive Salaga, London markets – Oye Lithur
Government is to consider the feasibility of reviving the Salaga Market and the legendary London Market to its former glory as centres of vibrant economic activities.
Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of Children, Gender and Social Protection, announced this on Friday when she embarked on a working visit to the markets and to pay courtesy call on a number of Wulomei (the traditional fetish priests and priestesses) of the Bukom and Akoto Lante Ga traditional areas.
She emphasized that her office would liaise with the Accra Metropolitan Authority to consider the options of either moving the traders from the Salaga market to the London marketplace or consider reviving both markets.
Nana Oye was in the company of Madam Esther Silver Parker, an advocate from the United States.
Madam Parker praised the Salaga market women for their entrepreneurial skills and urged them to improve on their activities.
Salaga is the capital town of East Gonja district in the Northern region.
It is said that during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the town served as a key commercial place particularly for the busy regional kola trade.
Consequently the salaga market served as a transit point through the Dagomba towns of Kpabia and Yendi, 350 years after Greater Dagomba was established, conquered and controlled that section of north Ghana.
The king of Dagomba promoted trade through Salaga and Yendi and this resulted in transport of cattle and groundnuts from Yendi via the Salaga Market.
The name Salaga comes from the Dagomba word “salgi” which means “to get used to a place of abode”.
