NADMO salutes humanitarian workers
The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), on Sunday paid tribute to persons who have lost their lives or injured themselves in the course of humanitarian work.
A press statement from signed by Kofi Portuphy National Co-ordinator of NADMO and copied to the GNA in commemoration of World Humanitarian Day which falls on Monday, August 19, said the day is designated by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate humanity and the spirit of humanitarianism, teamwork and bravery.
The statement said the day is marked to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of humanitarian personnel and those who risk their lives to offer help and hope to others.
It said the commemoration of the World Humanitarian Day is aimed at keeping the humanitarian torch burning and ensuring that the tragic loss of lives of humanitarian personnel as well as others in relieving the suffering of victims of humanitarian crises is not in vain.
It also celebrates the passion for humanitarianism and aims at inculcating the spirit of humanitarianism in human kind.
“Whatever the emergency, from earthquake to conflict, flood to pandemic flu, the story is the same; relief workers leave the comfort of their homes to help others in need.
World Humanitarian Day is celebrated to recognize the day the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to Iraq, Sergio Vieira De Mello and 21 of his colleagues tragically made the ultimate sacrifice following the bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, in August 2003”.
The statement said the goal of this year’s celebration is to build on last year’s momentum with a global movement that also generates funding for humanitarian aid.
“With the conviction that the world needs more of everything one can think of in making life comfortable for humanity, we wish to encourage companies and individuals to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) with material and logistical assistance for humanitarian purposes as well as respond to humanitarian crises including natural and man-made disasters.
It said the primary objective of humanitarian aid is to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity thus NADMO needs more aid to do that adding that “as we remember those who have lost their lives in the course of helping others, let us make positive and lasting impressions on the lives of the vulnerable. They need us”.
The statement said “NADMO joins the UN, Humanitarian Aid Organizations around the world to mark the Day by being charitable, compassionate, philanthropic and mindful of the fact that the World needs more of aid, food, shelter, portable drinking water, teamwork, humanity, action, immunization, love, peace and happiness among others. Indeed the list is endless and yes, the World Needs More”.
