African Junior Athletics Championships: Ghana races against deadline
Ghana is on the brink of missing out of yet another continental athletics championship, this time the African Junior Championships in Athletics in Mauritius.
The Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) is racing against time to meet the Friday, August 23 deadline set by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) to confirm participation for championship billed for August 29 to September 1 in the Indian Ocean Island due to financial constraints.
Checks by GNA Sports at the CAA indicate that Ghana has at least 96 hours to authenticate their participation for the three-day championship targeted at athletes of 19-years and below.
The source said 24 teams have formalized their intent with the numbers expected to swell before the deadline.
The GAA were saved by the bell after the event initially fixed for South Africa in June was moved to Mauritius at the end of August after administrative problems in the host country.
At the time, Ghana’s participation was uncertain due to the perennial lack of funds hanging around the neck of the GAA.
About a dozen of athletes have qualified for the event including Albert Nkrumah and Elizabeth Dadzie, who made the mark at the Ashanti Regional Super Zonal Championship few months.
Earlier in the year, Ghana failed to present a team for the African Youth Athletics Championship in Warri, Nigeria due to the unavailability of funds, whilst Janet Amponsah was the sole representative at the World Athletics Championship in Russia.
