Gov’t sets up committee to settle Agona West and East dispute

The government has set up a committee to settle a boundary dispute between Agona West Municipal and Agona East District Assembly.

Nana Oduro Kwarteng, the Gyantuahene of Agona Swedru, made this known when he addressed a durbar of chiefs and people of Agona Swedru to mark the Akwambo festival at Swedru.

He did not give details about the committee but expressed the hope that it would soon complete its work.

Chiefs in Agona Swedru petitioned the government about a piece of their land that went to Agona East during the border demarcation in 2004.

According the chiefs during the demarcation that separated Agona East from the former Agona District, New Sawmill, the abattoir and the local cemetery went to the Agona East District and expressed displeasure that they were not benefiting from revenue from that piece of their land.

The Swedru chiefs at their meeting on August 15, which was attended by the Central Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, his Deputy Mrs Queenster Pokuah Sawyer and Mr Samuel Oppong, MCE for Agona West, expressed concern about the situation.

The Regional Minister appealed to the chiefs to be patient for the committee to find a lasting solution to the problem.
