Accra to host WAFU tournament

footballGhana will host the third edition of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone B tournament from October 24 to November 3 in Accra.

The sub-regional body headed by Kwesi Nyantakyi, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) took the decision at a recent meeting.

An official of the zonal body’s secretariat in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire told GNA Sports eight teams will take part in a two-week tournament, which will feature locally-based players.

Seven of the team will come from the WAFU Zone B namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Togo with Mauritania, from the WAFU Zone A completing the quartet.

The matches will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium and the El-Wak Stadium.

The source said the tournament will also serve a preparatory ground for the teams in the region that has qualified for next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for South Africa next January.

The tourney will be the first major competition since Nyantakyi took over the reigns of the zonal body two years ago.
