Africa World Airlines to begin regional flights
Africa World Airlines (AWA) will soon begin regional flights to Nigeria, Mr. Apiigy Afenu, the Airlines Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Africa has said.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Afenu said AWA had received its designation to fly into four states in Nigeria namely Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt.
The tentative date for the start of the Nigeria flights would be October 2nd to coincide with the Independence Day of Nigeria.
Mr. Afenu said AWA had also received designation for flights to Sierra-Leone and it is also working on attaining a designation for Liberia.
He, however, noted that the airline would only begin flights to the destinations when they are certain that the economics would also work for the airline in order to make it sustainable.
“We don’t just fly because we have the designation, the economics must also work for the airline that is the only way we can sustain this airline into the future,” he stated.
He said the airline would take delivery of a new aircraft on October 20, 2013 and another by end of the year to bring its total fleet to four.
“We will grow aggressively. We are blessed because we have the backing of technical partners who can provide unlimited resources in terms of the market in this sub-region and so once we can identify a market potential and can make a business case, then getting the access to do the operations is not a problem for us,” he said.
Africa World airline’s vision is to be a regional airline providing air travel services to the whole of Africa. It has so far provided charter services for Liberian President -Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Director General of Canada- Mr. David Lloyd Johnston and Sierra-Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma.
