Monetary inducements dangerous to democracy – Afotey Agbo
Nii Joseph Laryea Afotey Agbo, Volta Regional Minister, condemned the practice of monetary inducements in the approval of nominees to the office of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCEs).
“One thing I am uncomfortable with is people nominated for positions having to go for money to influence others to influence their approval,” which he said.
Nii Afotey-Agbo expressed this concern at a meeting of the Ketu North District Assembly to approve Mr Lawson Kofie as its DCE.
Mr Lawson Kofie polled 40 out of 55 votes for his endorsement as DCE.
Nii Afotey Agbo said also disturbing is the emerging practice of some people using monetary inducements to get assembly members not to endorse nominees.
He called for strict adherence to probity and accountability.
Nii Afotey Agbo, three times Member of Parliament for Kpone/Akatamanso, suggested that painstaking consultations must be made right from the unit committee level before people were considered for appointment to official positions.
Mr Kofie promised to sustain the consultative approach to the areas development.
