Wa West to draw up action plan to improve academic performance
The Wa West Youth Development Association (WAWYDA) has organized a one-day workshop at Wechiau in the Wa West District to draw an action plan that would be geared towards improving the academic performance of children in the district.
The workshop which was on the theme: “Improving Child Performance in School: The Role of Stakeholders”, brought together assembly members, chiefs, parents, circuit supervisors and educational practitioners in general to discuss the problems, causes and challenges in order to chat a way forward.
Dr. Abdulai Darimani, Chairman of WAWYDA Planning Committee, said the Association became concerned when it received reports that the District scored 37 per cent in the 2012 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
He said the essence of the workshop was therefore to enable the Association understand the general situation of education in the district, identify the causes specific to poor child performance, find solutions to improving on the performance and adopt practical steps for implementing the solutions.
Dr. Darimani noted that school education in contemporary world was critical in accelerating the pace of development and appealed to stakeholders to show the highest level of commitment towards the implementation of the Action Plan that would come out at the end of the workshop.
Mr. Mahama Iddrisu, the Regional Director of Education, blamed poor student performance on three factors including poor parenting, negative teacher attitude and poor school environment.
Mr. Iddrisu called for the need for stakeholders to focus on addressing these three key factors and appealed to communities to enact by-laws on things that have negative influence on children to enable them have time to learn.
Mr. Adamu Dasaana, Wa West District Chief Executive, commended WAWYDA for the initiative in bringing stakeholders together to find solutions to addressing the fallen standards of education in the District.
He said the Assembly had extended electricity to 41 communities and their schools within the district to facilitate the learning of ICT, adding that another 200 low tension poles had been procured to do same to the rest of the communities in the District.
Mr. Dasaana pledged the Assembly’s commitment to help to implement the Action Plan that would come out at the end of the workshop.
