Newmont Ghana cautions opportunists
Management of the Newmont Golden Ridge Limited, Akyem Project, has cautioned against the construction of structures in Oil Palm and Teak Plantations by some community members to attract compensation from the company.
Mr Oduro-Kwarteng Marfo, External Relations Manager of the company, gave the caution when he took the Ghana News Agency (GNA) round to inspect some of those structures right in the heart of the bush at Adausena near New Abirem in the Birim North District.
He expressed worry that the construction of those structures was widespread and on-going, saying the company saw it in its own interest to stop paying any compensation in such situations.
Mr Kwarteng said in the past, the company was forced to pay compensation to people who deliberately put up structures at the peripheral of the company’s boundaries.
“This time the company will not pay anybody who does that,” he said.
The GNA counted as many as 20 structures constructed with brand new roofing sheets scattered all over the bush.
When interviewed, one Mr. Gyan, an oil palm plantation owner, said he was constructing the structures for his workers.
