Electoral reforms will defeat Supreme Court verdict – Methodist Bishop

An Obuasi Methodist Church Bishop has criticized calls for electoral reforms following the outcome of the Presidential Election Petition at the Supreme Court, saying “the reforms will defeat the verdict of the court”.

Rt. Rev. Stephen Richard Bosomtwe-Ayensu said since the petitioners’ claims were dismissed there was nothing wrong with the electoral system.

He said any electoral reforms would defeat the verdict of the Supreme Court and cast a question mark on the integrity of the judges who adjudicated in the 2012 Presidential Election Petition.

Addressing the opening of the 8th biennial diocesan delegate’s conference of the Obuasi Diocese of the Association of Methodist Church Choirs at the Akrokerri College of Education, Rt Rev Bosomtwe-Ayensu said “some of us will challenge any person who will call for electoral reforms because this will raise question marks on the integrity of the judges.”

The four-day conference was under the theme “witnessing to Christ today-the role of the chorister in mobilizing our diocesan resources for ministry.”

He condemned the way advertisements on sex-enhancing drugs were put on air and said they should be curbed.

The national chairman of the Ghana Association of Methodist Church Choirs (GHAMECC), Professor Yaw Sekyi-Baidoo, called on Methodist choirs to exploit new ways and harness opportunities that would make their singing evangelise.

On his part the Obuasi Diocesan Chairman of GHAMECC, Mr. Emmanuel K. Buadu, said that the Methodist Development Fund (MDF), when sustained and managed, could enhance the Church’s income for development.

He expressed the hope that the church would move away from the traditional system of raising funds to a more strategic and sustainable way, adding that other dioceses had gone into big time projects which had yielded good dividends.
