Joint university pensioners’ consultative meeting held

The Joint Executive Consultative meeting of pensioners associations of three public universities has been held at the Ford Foundation premises of the University of Ghana Legon.

The meeting brought together the University of Ghana Pensioners Association (UGPA), the University of Cape Coast Pensioners Association (UCCPA) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Pensioners Association (KNUSTPA).

Among topics discussed include the finalisation of their revised constitution, the single spine salary scheme for the retired members, a biometric registration to be carried out by the University of Ghana and a medical screening of its retired members.

Addressing the delegates at the meeting, the Chairman of the University of Ghana Pensioners Association, Mr Emmanuel A. Asagba took the members through the constitution, which has been amended and would be signed later during the next meeting.

He informed the delegates that management of the University of Ghana had taken over the responsibility to register all pensioners of the University of Ghana for the biometric registration exercise.

He said pensioners from the University of Ghana would soon be given health checks or screening as part of the exercise.

Mr Zakaria Gumah, the Secretary for the Legon Branch of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), informed the delegates that TEWU members were currently on a sit-down strike.

He explained that they were calling for the restoration of their various allowances and were seeking to bridge the gap between the senior staff and the junior staff.

Mr Gumah expressed the hope that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission would consider their concerns.
