Ghanaians lauded for showing political maturity
Dr Emmanuel Kwesi Aning, Head of the Department of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra, on Friday lauded Ghanaians for showing political maturity in the aftermath of the Supreme Court ruling on the 2012 Presidential Election petition.
He said Ghanaians had shown to the world that they were first and foremost Ghanaians, before being politicians.
Dr Aning made the remark in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of a two-week course on “Managing defence in a wider security context”.
The course was organized by the KAIPTC in collaboration with the Cranfield University of the United Kingdom and sponsored by the British Government.
Dr Aning said although Ghanaians had respected the verdict of the Supreme Court, the real issue was how the ruling would affect the nation’s future elections.
He said there was the need for more vigilance by all stakeholders in subsequent elections, and that political parties would be required to sell their messages to the electorate by conducting issue-based campaigns.
He urged politicians to desist from the politics of vilification and insults.
Dr Aning said the electorate in general would not allow themselves to be deceived by politicians but rather they would be looking out for candidates with better ideas and policies which would improve their lives.
