Ghanaians remain shock over Prof. Awoonor’s death
Mr Kuma Nartei, a businessman on Monday joined the many Ghanaians who have expressed shock at the death of Professor Kofi Awoonor, former Chairman of the Council of State.
Prof Awoonor died in a shooting incident at the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday, September 21.
According to sources, Prof Awoonor who was scheduled to address Storymoja Hay, an annual Kenyan literacy festival, was shot at close range when he visited the mall to have breakfast with his son, Afetsi Awoonor.
His son who was wounded is recuperating in hospital. Al-Shabab, an al Qaeda-linked terrorist group, attacked the mall with guns and grenades.
Mr Kuma Nartei, a businessman, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Monday that he was very shocked with the news.
He said all along he thought that terrorism was far from Ghana but “with this unfortunate event one could easily see we are just in danger like any other country”.
Mr Nartei expressed the need for all to contribute their quota to ensure that peace prevails on the continent.
Ms Joyce Ayitta, a student at the University of Ghana, Legon, said Ghana had lost an illustrious son and extended her condolence to the bereaved family.
She said although she did not know Prof Awoonor personally, she read most of his books and heard a lot about his academic and political achievements.
Ms Ayitta said Ghana had “lost such an accomplished individual who offered his wisdom and knowledge to build the country”.
