Kassena Nankana improves health insurance scheme

The Kassena Nankana East Municipal and the Kassena Nankana West District have improved significantly in the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Scheme Manager, Mr David Samari, has said.

Speaking to the GNA in an interview during the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the scheme, he said the Scheme which managed the two districts had increased its enrolment to 10,000 out of the 17,000 population of both the two Districts.

He said the remaining 7,000 had registered with the scheme but defaulted in renewing their cards and added that that efforts were being made to get them renew their cards by reaching them at their doorsteps.

“Zonal and District Officers had been moving to the doorsteps of customers and registering and renewing their cards for them without delaying and this had led to the achievement of these good results” , he said.

He said the scheme had registered 12,000 indigenes in the two Districts who could not afford to pay for the NHIS premium and said such people are catered for freely and that they were still registering more of such people in the area.

Mr Samari mentioned the abuse of the Scheme by many people and said people kept on moving from one facility to another facility and also using their friends’ and relatives’ cards to access health care and that this practice, when not stopped, could lead to the un-sustainability of the scheme.

He said paying health providers had been improved and appealed to the government and non-government organizations to support the scheme with motorbikes to enable the staff reach the remote areas.
