Body of Late Prof. Awoonor arrives home

The body of the late Professor Kofi Awoonor, former Chairman of the Council of State has arrived in Accra via a Kenyan Airways flight.

The body was accompanied by family members including his son, Afetsi Awoonor.

The renowned Poet and Writer was shot and killed by the militant group, al-Shabab at the Westgate Shopping Centre in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday September 21, during a shooting spree which claimed the lives of more than 60 others.

Government officials, family members and dignitaries converged at the Kotoka International Airport to receive the remains.

Some traditional rites were performed by the elders of the family at the airport.

A family member of the Late Professor joined the rest of the family to sing a farewell song.

After the short ceremony, the body which was draped in the national colours was sent to the Sakumono funeral home in Greater Accra Region.

The final funeral rites of the late Prof Awoonor will be held on November 9, in Wheta in the Volta Region according to family sources.
