ICAO elects new Council

Following a three part election process, the 38th Session of the Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on October 1, completed the election of its new Council.

The Council is made up of 36- Member States and acts as the governing body of the Organisation.

A statement issued by Mr Eric Amaning, Corporate Communication Officer of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday said the Council is elected for a three-year term, during the Assembly of all Member States.

It said the Council is made up of 11 States of chief importance in air transport; 12 states which make the largest contribution to the provision of facilities for international civil aviation; and 13 states chosen to ensure geographic representation.

The statement added that eight African States were elected onto the Council.

“The Assembly discussed various issues of concern to the aviation community bordering on aviation safety and security, developments in air navigation, consumer protection and economic regulations, as well as legal issues confronting civil aviation especially unlawful interference in international civil aviation.

“Notable among resolutions passed was the need for States to comply with the 2015 deadline for migration to machine readable travel documents,” it said.

It noted that Ghana’s delegation to the Assembly was led by the Minister of Transport, Mrs Dzifa Attivor.

It said other members include representatives from the Ministry, Parliament, the GCAA, Ghana Airport Company Limited, Ghana Immigration Service and Ghana’s representative to ICAO.
