Project rejected for lacking disability friendly designs

DisableMr Alexis Adugdaa Ayamdor, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo in the Upper East Region, has rejected a three-unit classroom block at Nayorigo because the contractor failed to add designs that were disability friendly.

According to the DCE, the assembly would only accept projects that took into consideration designs that were disability friendly and advised the construction firm, Robert Aboor’s Enterprise, to design rambles to areas including the classrooms and washrooms to make them accessible to Persons with Disability (PWDs).

Another three-unit classroom block with its ancillaries at Nayorigo, constructed by Robert Aboor’s Enterprise at a cost of 96,682.32 Ghana cedis and funded from the DDF, was also rejected for not being PWD friendly.

He warned contractors that the assembly would not accept any project that failed to consider disability friendly designs.

Mr Ayamdor, however, accepted two other projects at separate functions at Gorogo-Soe, Zorko-Atenseka and Nayorigo all in Bongo.

They were a 6.3 kilometres Gorogo-Soe feeder roads executed by Lampoher Engineering Company Limited valued at 297,716.13 Ghana cedis with funding from the Ghana Social Opportunity Project (GSOP), and the construction of a three-unit classroom block with its ancillary facilities at Zorko-Atenseka by Al-Aras Enterprise, a Bolgatanga based firm, valued at 96,902.23 Ghana cedis with funding from the District Development Facility (DDF).

Mr Ayamdor warned that the assembly would not tolerate any contractor who would do shoddy work, adding; “value for money is one of the cardinal principles of this Government and the assembly will not hesitate to blacklist any contractor whose work did not meet specifications, standards and schedule.”

The DCE tasked the Works and Physical Department of the Assembly to ensure that the three-unit classroom block with its ancillary facilities at Zorko-Atenseka was adopted as a model and replicated in other communities.

He, therefore, entreated other contractors to visit the site to learn from the contractor.

He called on the Ghana Education Service (GES), the assembly and community members to endeavour to monitor ongoing projects in their communities and offer feedback to the assembly for redress if there was the need.

The chiefs, communities, assembly members and the GES expressed appreciation to the leadership of the District Assembly and appealed to it to help furnish the classrooms.

The DCE was accompanied by members of the GSOP Regional Technical team, the District Assembly Works and Physical Department, District Director of the Department of Social Welfare and the GES among others.
