Traditional medicine must be properly regulated – Dr Sory

Dr. Elias Sory, former Director-General of the Ghana Health Services (GHS), has urged those in traditional medicine practice to ensure that they operate within guidelines set out by the law.

They need to uphold best practices to promote quality assurance especially as efforts at mainstreaming traditional medicine into the national health care system intensified.

Dr. Sory was speaking at an awards ceremony organized by the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners (GHAFTRAM), to recognize the outstanding contribution of 30 of its members.

They were presented with prizes including wax print, certificates and citation.

The former Director-General noted that the significant part traditional medicine continues to play in the health delivery system – catering for the health needs of about 60 per cent of the rural population.

It is therefore necessary to insist on the right things being done to protect public health.

Dr. Sory encouraged non-members to register with the federation to help develop a credible data base and properly regulate their activities.

Mr. Kwadwo Eduful, the President of GHAFTRAM, spoke of plans to build the capacity of its members to enhance their practice through training.
