Residents in Koforidua want transport fares reduced

Koforidua residents have expressed worry about the failure of transport unions to reduce the transport fares despite the reduction of prices of fuel by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

The NPA recently reduced price of petroleum products by four percent with the expectation that drivers would also reduce the fares but they still maintain the old fares.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Koforidua on Wednesday, some of the residents said it was unfortunate that no action had been taken by the transport unions to reduce the fares.

They urged the authorities to ensure that drivers comply with the directives and reduce fares since the economic situation currently is too high.

“Anytime there is announcement of fuel price increase, drivers do not wait for directives from the authorities before increasing fares but when there is reduction they feel reluctant to do same,” said Samuel Kofi Baah, a resident.

Mr Moses Tweneford Lalas, Chairman of the New Juaben branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), said they had not received any directive from their national headquarters hence their inability to reduce the fares.

He however said the four percent reduction was “nothing” and could not make any difference since after the fuel price increase prices of spare parts also went up astronomically.
