Tema DOVSU records 1,400 cases
The Tema Regional Office of the Domestic Violence Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service recorded a total of 1,409 reported cases between January and June, this year.
Out of the total, Ashaiman Municipality topped with 937 cases, while the community two district office had only eight reports during the period.
Superintendent of Police Rebecca Nyamah, Tema Regional Coordinator of DOVVSU, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Thursday.
Supt. Nyamah said 108 of the cases were from Tema Newtown, 175, 28, and 59 were also recorded at the Sakumono, Tema main, and Ada offices respectively.
The others were Community 11, Prampram and Dodowa recording 31, 29 and 34, in that order.
She said some of the reported cases were assault, stealing, rape, threat of death, threat of harm and offensive conduct.
Others, she added, were defilement, criminal abortion, child stealing and attempted suicide, among others.
She said assault cases topped the records with 790, followed by 132 defilement cases, 88 threats of harm, 76 threats of death and 70 stealing cases.
Supt Nyamah indicated that a total of 1,947 non-maintenance of family related cases were also received by her outfit during the first half of the year.
Out of the total, she indicated that 207 of the cases were sent to the family tribunal, 85 to social welfare, five to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) whilst one case was sent FIDA
She said various outreach and educational programmes organized by her outfit in schools, markets and religious groupings, as well as in the media, helped to sensitize the people on the need to report domestic violence.
The DOVVSU Coordinator added that, such sensitization programmes has yielded positive results leading to an overall decrease in the rate of domestic violence in the Tema Police Region.
