Government should check farming along river bodies – NGO

Mr Asaah Mohammed, Lecturer of University of Development and Studies on Friday urged government and Non Government Organization (NGO) to access farming practice along the river buffer zone.

He said it is important for the government to make policy to regular the farming and other destructive activates in the river buffer zone.

Mr Mohammed made the advised at the closing ceremony of two-day annual learning and sharing on climate change adaption, organizes by Care International in Accra.

He stated that the climate change situations had affected farmers in the rural areas especially in the three Northern regions.

He called on the policy madders and planning for the development of the rural areas to consider effective management of the White Volta River.

Mr Romanus Gyang, Manager for Adaptation Learning Programme in his presentation said it is important to build accessibility and affordability of weather forecast to the smallholder farmers in the three Northern regions to reduce poverty resourced the community.

He said Farmers need daily or weekly weather forecast information for effective agricultural planning to enable them to reduce the risk of crop failure due to drought spell in May-June this year in the Upper East region.

Mr Gyang also called on the NGO to share climate information locally and scientific sources on the local radio stations for the people in the community can understand it better.
