Swiss Red Cross supports Ghanaian counterpart
The Swiss Red Cross has provided four motorbikes costing GHC 8,000 to the Ghana Red Cross Society to facilitate implementation and monitoring of its humanitarian activities in hard to reach areas.
The motorbikes, which have been distributed to selected district organisers of the Red Cross Society, would enable them visit communities in the Northern and Upper West Regions as part of efforts to enhance service delivery in its Vision First Eye Care Programme in Ghana.
A statement signed by Mr Samuel Kofi Addo, Secretary General of Ghana Red Cross Society and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Monday, said the Programme was a collaborative effort between Ghana Red Cross Society, Swiss Red Cross and the Ghana Health Service.
“The objective is to provide quality, affordable and accessible primary eye care service to the people of the Upper West, Northern and Brong Ahafo regions.”
According to the release, the programme started in the Upper West Region in 1990 and had seen thousands of people benefiting from free eye care services including eye testing, provision of medication and surgery.
The Ghana Red Cross Society and Swiss Red Cross belong to Red Cross Movement which exists to help people who have been afflicted by natural disasters, armed conflicts, and many other human tragedies.
“Victims around the world have come to trust the Red Cross to be there to provide essential humanitarian services in times of need. This service is provided without bias or prejudice and is only aimed at the vulnerable”, the statement said.
