20 Accra pupils qualify for 2014 Spelling Bee grand finale
Twenty school children from Accra who participated in “The Spell Bee” Competition, had qualified for the national finals in February, 2014.
The competition was organized by the Young Educators Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation, with the vision of improving lives of the youth through literacy.
Speaking at the event, Naa Arku Ankah, Girls’ Education Officer of the Accra Metro Education Office, told the students that their analytical thinking and writing depend on reading.
She said reading hovers around every formal learning situation, and serves as a source of information, and fundamental to academic work in school.
“Reading would enable you to gain the understanding of the English language, raise your confidence level, and convince a reader of your request,” she said.
Naa Ankah asked teachers to teach the pupils to become efficient in reading, spelling and pronunciation.
She expressed gratitude to the organisers in helping to promote and improve the lives of the youth in education in the country.
Mrs Eugenia Tachie-Menson, Country Director of the Young Educators Foundation, explained that the Spelling Bee programme teaches primary children between the ages of eight and 13 how to improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn and understand word concept.
It is a local version of the internationally acclaimed Scripps Spelling Bee of USA, she said.
