Upper East inaugurates regional road safety committee
The Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru on Saturday inaugurated a reconstituted 25 member Road Safety Committee for the Upper East Region.
The Committee is expected to assist in carrying out road safety education using various modalities and channels including the media, face-to-face, durbars, group and institutional campaigns to reduce road crashes in the Region.
The committee, chaired by the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Isaac Alex Quainoo, also has the Regional Minister as its Patron.
In an inaugural address, Alhaji Mohammed-Muniru said the carnage on the country’s roads was unacceptable as it took away precious human resource, left families consistently unhappy and maimed several thousands of innocent lives.
He indicated that the campaign against road crashes was not for the police and the Road Safety Commission alone to pursue, but that it needed the entire citizenry to wake up to the call to ensure that the country’s roads were safe.
The Minister charged the committee members to show commitment in pursuing the agenda for safety on roads in the Region and admonished them that road safety issues were comprehensively involving and needed extensive collaboration, persuasive communication, and the strict enforcement of road safety laws in reducing the menace.
The chairman of the committee urged members to quickly start work as accidents occurred more frequently during the Yuletide which was just around the corner and therefore scheduled the first meeting of the committee for Thursday, 21 November.
Mr Alex Ayeta, Acting Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission called on members of the committee to show commitment in their roles to reduce road accidents, adding that by the close of September this year the Region had recorded 44 deaths relating to road crashes.
He said the situation was bad for the Region hence the need for committee members to commit themselves to their activities.
Mr. Ayete informed the committee members that his outfit remained the secretariat for them and gave the assurance that it would do everything in its capacity to support the committee to succeed in its endeavours.
The committee members were drawn from institutions and Departments such as the Regional Coordinating Council, Department of Urban Roads, the Ghana News Agency, the Ghana Highway Authority, the National Ambulance Service, the Ghana Police Service, Department of Feeder Roads, the Ghana Health Service and the Ghana Education Service.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union, Metro Mass Transit, State Transport Corporation, as well as the Ghana Red Cross Society were also represented on the committee.
