Fire Service worried over fake phone calls
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has expressed concern about the growing number of phone calls by people raising false alarm about fire emergencies and warned offenders to stop.
It said the situation where people raised false alarm about fire emergencies could not be allowed to continue.
The Service would collaborate with the National Communication Authority (NCA) to track down those who engaged in such reckless conduct to bring them to justice.
Desmond Essoun Ackah, Assistant Divisional Officer II, of the Ashanti Regional Office of the GNFS Safety and Investigation Department, told the Ghana News Agency during a public education campaign that they had received a total of 41such fake telephone calls this year.
He said misuse of the emergency telephone lines could hinder swift response to otherwise genuine emergencies.
The campaign formed part of the annual safety week celebration in Kumasi to herald preparations towards fire prevention during the dry season.
Firefighters demonstrated to the people how to subdue fire and the use of the fire extinguisher as they went on float through selected parts of the metropolis.
Mr Ackah appealed for public support and co-operation to enable the Service to efficiently carry out its job of protecting lives and property.
He encouraged the people to heed safety education, noting that some fires were preventable.
He warned of the prosecution of private property owners who failed to obtain fire certificates.
