Sissala West BECE candidates record massive failure

PupilsOut of 721 candidates who sat the 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region, 607 failed representing 84.2%.

The remaining 114 candidates representing only 15% passed but with very weak grades.

The district recorded 28% BECE pass in 2011 which increased to 29% in 2012 but this has reduced to only 15% in 2013.

Mr. Moses Dramani Luri, the Sissala West District Chief Executive who said this during the third ordinary meeting of the Assembly, expressed deep worry about the abysmal performance of BECE candidates in the district.

He said this showed clearly that there was a monumental problem begging stakeholders to deal with in order to change the falling trend of education standards in the District.

Mr. Luri said the problems facing education was beyond the handling of one institution and called for a sectoral approach in order to reverse the trend.

He appealed to the District Director of Education to submit a comprehensive list of challenges facing education in the District and possible suggestions on the way forward for the Assembly to study and act.

On revenue, Mr. Luri said from a projection of GH₵67,470.00 for the year, the Assembly had so far collected GH₵56,677.92.
