Government committed to reduce post-harvest losses – MCE
Mr John Kwao Sackey, Ga East Municipal Chief Executive, on Friday said Government has demonstrated commitment to the reduction of post-harvest loses for increased food security and nutrition.
He said the establishment of the National Buffer Stock Company to facilitate the purchase, preservation and distribution of food stuff from farmers attest to that.
“This is an attempt to insulate our farmers against post-harvest losses resulting from anticipated increase in production.”
Mr Sackey was speaking at the 29th National Farmers Day Celebration of the Municipality at Abokobi in Accra.
The 2013 celebration was on the theme: “Reducing post-Harvest Losses for Sustainable Food Security and Nutrition.”
He said noted that the Agricultural productivity in the municipality is being challenged by rapid urbanisation, destruction of crops by livestock and inadequate tractor services.
Nii Samuel Adjetey Mohenu, Abokobi Mantse and Chairman of the ceremony expressed the need for sustained efforts to preserve the harvest of farmers so that the value chain process would be complete.
“As farmers, our joy would be complete when we are able to feed the nation and even have some for export to generate foreign exchange for the development of our nation,” he said.
The overall Municipal Best Farmer went to Madam Twumwua Kodie, Best Technology Adaptor; Madam Rebecca Ashikor, while the Best Youth Farmer went to Samuel Mensah, of St John’s Grammar School.
The Best Maize Farmer was annexed by Mr David Adjei.
