CREW project introduced in Upper East Region
The Community Resilience through Early Warning (CREW) project has been introduced in Upper East Region, to address perennial floods and drought problems in the country.
The regional consultative workshop was part of the nationwide consultative meetings to build partnership among stakeholders and discuss baseline data collection on disasters, pending the validation of the project.
The National Disaster Management Organisation and UNDP project has a five million- dollar initial funding from the UNDP for three years.
Dr Kinsford Asamoah, CREW Manager, said the project intends to use both scientific and indigenous approaches in gathering data on community vulnerabilities and capacities and identify early warning systems to prevent disasters.
He said the project would also help to build the capacities of communities for early warning signs.
The project involves communities, which would identify realistic environmental friendly projects in each region for disaster prevention.
Dr Asamoah said early warning system software would also be placed in all communities, district and regional capitals for trained personnel to use for detection of early warning signs.
Mr Daniel Syme, Deputy Regional Minister said CREW had come at the right time and urged management of the project to build the capacities of staff on Information Communication and Telecommunication to handle the software on the project.
He proposed the establishment of contingency fund at all regional coordinating councils to be used to mitigate flood related issues.
