Union urges Ghanaian health workers to work harder in 2014
The Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU) of the Trades Union Congress has challenged its members to distinguish themselves at work in order for productivity to commensurate with demands for improved remuneration and better working conditions.
A statement signed by Abu D. Kuntulo General Secretary of HSWU and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday also reminded Government and employers that the responsibility for managing productivity rests squarely on them.
“While urging the teeming members to work conscientiously in their lawfully chosen occupations to enhance productivity, we remind Government and employers that the responsibility for managing productivity rests squarely on them,” it said.
It said even though the labour front was confronted with some major challenges on the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) and its attendant agitations in the areas of implementation of outstanding issues in 2013 including the hikes in tariffs, HSWU was able to deliver health services “Willingly and Unswervingly” as the Union’s motto emphasized.
“The Leadership of HSWU will continue to intensify its District and National basic education and training drive to inspire and encourage members to continue to work with Managements in the health facilities. This will ensure quality healthcare delivery to maintain industrial peace in the health service and its environs,” it said.
The statement said, as part of its resolve to maintain a formidable Health Sector Union, HSWU would in the coming year intensify its education and training drive to cover more members and health professional associations, partnering or affiliated to it.
“We affirm that membership welfare issues have continued to occupy the center stage of the Union’s Mission to an extent that the Union has established and is operating a Welfare Scheme for its members who exit from the service of both the employer and the Union. We call on the Government and the NPRA to ensure that Public Health Service Employees’ Tier 2 contributions are paid into the registered Health Sector Occupational Pension Scheme,” it said.
The statement urged all members of the Union to remain resolute in their firm belief of trade union principles of solidarity, unity of purpose, cooperation and collaboration whilst leadership continues to work towards the achievements of common goals in the interests of all.
“The HSWU very much cherishes the working relationship, unity, commitments and collaboration in 2013. As we are about to be ushered into a new year, leadership in oneness prays that God will renew our strength and grant us exceptional favour, wisdom and foresight to carry out our duties and meet the aspiration of members,” it added.
