Increase supply of premix fuel – Association pleads

The Central Regional Association of Premix Landing Beaches, has called on the National Premix Committee to increase the supply of the fuel to the beaches.

It said this would enable the fishermen to get the fuel for their fishing expenditure.

At a meeting of the Association at Apam to review their performance in 2013 and plan for 2014, Mr Kweku Sam, Public Relations Officer of the association said the supply of the fuel in 2013 was inadequate to meet the demands of the fishermen.

He said the supply of one tanker in a week to the landing beaches was not enough, especially during the major fishing season and appealed to the National Premix Committee to make it at least two tankers.

Mr Erskine Amoah, Secretary to the Association commended the government for channelling the sale of fishing gears through the Association and said it helped the fishermen to get the gears without encountering any problems.

“It removed the problems of profiteering and corruption which fishermen faced before getting the gears,” he said.

Mr Amoah assured the government that the Association was ready to continue to help in the sale of the gears.

Mr Ebenezer Crentsil, Secretary to the Apam branch of the Committee and Treasure to the Regional Association urged the members to produce identity cards for the fishermen to use in buying the fuel.

“This could help in knowing those who bought the fuel in a particular week to enable them sell to those who did not get next time the supply comes,” he said.

Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, Gomoa West District Chief Executive appealed to the Association to ensure proper accountability to the communities for their share of the proceeds from the sale of the fuel which were meant for community development projects.

A certain percentage of the proceeds go to the communities for their development projects such as building of schools, toilet facilities, day care centres.
