Police arrests suspected car snatcher
Shaibu Iddrissu, 35, a suspected car snatcher has been arrested and placed in police custody in Sunyani.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christopher Tawiah, Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer said on December 30, last year the suspect and his accomplice now at large hired a taxi driven by Thomas Barnier, 37, from Sunyani to Techiman.
He said on the way near Yawhima, the suspects attempted to snatch the taxi from the driver and inflicted machete wounds on him which resulted in his death but during the act, the cries of the driver attracted some people to the scene, who chased the suspects away.
ASP Tawiah said they saw the suspects standing behind the taxi, which had developed an engine problem but on seeing the people took to their heels but Shaibu was chased and a machete wound was inflicted on his left shoulder but managed to escape.
He said the matter was reported to the police patrol team who detailed personnel to the scene and the corpse was taken to the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Hospital morgue in Sunyani for autopsy.
ASP Tawiah said announcements were made on the radio for the public as well as the various hospitals and health facilities to report to the police anyone with machete wounds.
He said the police were informed about the presence of the suspect at the Chiraa Hospital for treatment and was arrested and placed in police cells to assist in investigations.
