University of Education thanks government for granting tax exemption

TaxThe University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Council has expressed gratefulness to the government for granting the tax exemption that enabled the release of an Audiology Van (HARK) donated by Rotary Club of Llanelli, Wales and Accra Labone .

Professor Akwesi Asabere-Amayaw, Vice Chancellor (VC), said this at a handing-over ceremony of the Hark by the club to the University (the Audiology Clinic) at Winneba.

He also expressed his appreciation to Rotary Club Accra-Labone and their counterpart in Llanelli for the support.

The VC said the first three are owned by Korle-Bu Hospital and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals and are used to serve the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Grater Accra and surrounding areas.

He said donation of the fourth HARK to UEW was very significant, because it is an indication of the recognition of the services they provide through their Audiology Clinic.

Prof. Asabere-Amayaw said the UEW through the Centre for Speech and Hearing Services of the Department of Special Education had a played pioneering role in the provision of screening and hearing assessment as well as early intervention services for children and adults with ear and hearing problems over the years.

He said the donation of the facility placed them at a higher level for an enhanced provision of services to individuals with hearing challenges.

According to him many children continue to have no access to auditory test and monitoring, largely because their parents cannot afford the cost of sending them to the few hearing assessment centre, which are located in the cites and urban areas.
Mr. Frank Osafo-Takyi, President of Rotary Club of Accra-Labone, handed over the HARK to the University on behalf of the Club.
