Major roads in Accra to be closed on Friday – MTTD

Road1The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) on Wednesday announced that certain major Roads in Accra will on Friday March 6, 2015, be temporary closed to the public.

The closure is in connection with the 58th Independence Day anniversary parade, which will take place at the independence square.

A statement issued and signed by Angwubutoge Awuni, the Deputy Commissioner of Police and Director General of the MTTD and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the roads will however be reopened after the event and called on the general motoring public to cooperate with the police to ensure a successful anniversary.

According to the statement roads designated to be closed at the event include; the 28th February road from CEPS Headquarters to Castle Junction, Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on the Lokko Street, Castle road from AU Circle to Osu Cemetery traffic light and the Starlet 95 road which will be closed at the Ministries Traffic light area.

Vehicles with embossed stickers and carrying spectators to the Independence Square would be allowed to pass through the various Police check points.

Areas earmarked for car parking at the event include, the forecourt of the State House, the International Conference Centre, International Bank car park, the Osu cemetery car park, the Accra sports stadium car park and the Ministries area.

The statement urged motorists to note that traffic from the 28th February road emanating from Labone, Osu and La heading towards the central business district will be diverted onto the Lokko Street at the Castle Traffic Light to link up with the Oxford Street.

It said on the High street traffic will be diverted onto the Liberia road through National Theatre and further link up to the Ring road towards Osu.

Motorists plying the Osu cemetery traffic intersection, the national theatre, the Accra Sports Stadium towards Accra shall use the TUC link towards Cathedral intersection and then link up with the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue.

No vehicle will be allowed to park at unauthorized places or drive through these road blockages. Security vehicles and vehicles carrying dignitaries would be allowed after thorough checks.

Traffic Police officers would be on hand to direct and assist motorists to the appropriate car parks and diverted roads.

Motorists are further advised to note these arrangements and plan alternative routes before embarking on their journey.
