Ghana Births and Deaths Registry receives vans to improve civil registration
The Births and Deaths Registry on Wednesday received 10 mobile registration vans to support vital registration activities in the country.
The vans, which were presented by the Ghana Statistics Development Project (GSDP), are to help improve the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (CRVS) in all the 10 regions of Ghana.
The vans included one cross-country vehicle that would serve monitoring purposes.
Dr Philomena Nyarko, Government Statistician, during the presentation ceremony, said there had been renewed interests in CRVS across Africa hence the donation.
She said the GSDP had carried out a comprehensive assessment of the system and there was a strategic plan for its improvement.
Dr Nyarko said the GSDP also procured 21 vehicles for other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) including the ministries of Education, Health, Finance, Trade and Industry, Lands and Natural Resources, Employment and Labour Relations, Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Ghana Statistical Service.
Dr Nyarko said the GSDP formed part of Governments efforts to strengthen the National Statistical System with the objective of producing and disseminating relevant information to stakeholders for policy formulation, monitoring and evaluation.
“The vehicles handed over today should support further improvements in the production, management, and dissemination of statistics through the implementation of project activities,” she said.
Dr Nyarko thanked the Government, the GSDP development partners under the Statistics for Results Facility and the International Development Association for funding the procurement of the vehicles.
She expressed appreciation to the British and Dutch Governments and the World Bank who are the GSDP Fund Managers for their interest and support in the development of statistics in the country.
She urged the various MDA’s to maintain and put the vehicles into good use.
The total cost of the 32 vehicles presented to the MDA’s were valued at GH¢ 4.1million
