Ga councils mount pressure on Oko Vanderpuije

The Ga, Osu and Ngleshie Traditional Councils have mounted pressure on Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), to help resolve whatever is impeding the flow of water into the Korle Lagoon Ecological Project.

The two councils noted that this would prevent disaster during heavy rains.

They also asked the MCE to continue with his policies to rid Accra of filth and unathorised structures to give the metropolis the needed facelift it deserves.

The members expressed these views when they toured the Korle Lagoon project site and Odawna to acquaint themselves with progress of work after the June 3, twin disaster which claimed many at Kwame Nkrumah circle in Accra.

They expressed dismay of the insanitary conditions at the area.

Nii Dodoo Nsaki II, President of the Ga Traditional Council and spokesperson s said members would not sit down unconcern when people frustrate the efforts of Dr Vanderpuije to continue with his bold policies to ensure that Accra is cleaner than before.

He said the two councils would support any government that aims at ensuring that the people in Accra live in a good atmosphere.

Nii Dodoo Nsaki said the ongoing demolishing and dredging of the Korle Lagoon aimed at paving the way for the free flow of water and should not be condemned.

Nii Amarkai III, Ngleshie Dzaase said: “We deem it unfortunate that in spite of all these calamities certain group of people resident in Accra continue to flout simple basic hygiene rules of the Assembly.”

He asked the public to understand that government alone could not address the enormous environmental problems in the present circumstances of population explosion.

Nii Amarkai advised the people to desist from politicising environmental issues since it undermines national effort of combating the problem.
